Open Journals Nigeria started as a free to publish concept relying on donations and goodwill. Regrettably, the management later realized that the journals’ sustainability and advancement, while relying on donations, was uncertain. Thus, meeting the journals’ operational expenses such as employees’ salaries, office maintenance cost, internet services cost, journal digital costs (ISSN, DOI, CLOCKSS), Preprint servers, Webservers/hosting, application development, electricity, support, etc. was not feasible.

To provide open access and ensure sustenance of Open Journals Nigeria, OJN therefore uses a contributory model in which its expenses are recovered in part by charging a contributory fee to authors or research sponsors for each article they publish. OJN offer waivers for authors who do not have funds to cover the contributory fee. OJN editors and reviewers have no access to account information, hence inability to pay the contributory fee will not influence the editorial decision to publish a paper. These policies ensure that the contributory fee is never a barrier to an articles' acceptance and publication.

The Authors contributory fee is a hundred dollars only ($100), which covers in-part for the submission, processing, review, publication and other maintenance expenses. This is the only fee  payable after acceptance of the manuscript. Contributory fee waivers might be award on special cases.

In-line with our policy to help researchers and authors alike, the management of OJN wishes to inform all authors that: it is currently offering waivers of 25% and 50% (depending on the editorial board decision).

Open Journals Nigeria is not contingent upon the author's ability to pay the contributory fee, neither is acceptance to pay the contributory fee a guarantee that the paper will be accepted for publication. If you do not have funds to pay the above fee, you may still request (in advance - during submission) that the editorial office waive part of the contributory fee. OJN do not want payment of contributory fees to hinder the publication of innovative researches.
